No words can describe the heart-wrenching feeling I have for all these children at the dump site. It is the saddest thing I ever seen in my life, young kids chasing after us when they saw our bus full of bread. We bought 1100 loafs of bread from a bakery at the cost of USD165/-. I have never been to the dump site and I did not regret doing so. Estimated more than a hundred orphans there and their daily job is to scavenge through tons of garbage dumped at the site. I seriously hope the government will help these people and not by making use of their horrible situation and earn money out of them.
Last year, the group visited the same place without paying anything. But we were stopped at the entrance and asked to pay a fee of USD5/- if we want to get in. We are giving out the bread and not asking for any return yet all these adults make use of the children to get profit out of them. There are inhuman beasts!. Knowing that these children are deny from the outside world and they can't earn much at the dump, yet they deprive others to help them by charging a fee. It was ridiculous!
Anyway, we just paid them accordingly since we already bought the bread. We don't want the bread to go wasted and we drove in. Luckily, we had a translator and gather everyone to queue up in two lines orderly in order for to distribute the bread. There was some pushing here and there.. some groping hungrily thinking that the bread is finishing. We didn't bring down all the bread to avoid snatching among the crowd. There was a boy who cried when he didn't get the bread. It was sad image and till now I still cannot get over it. I bet many of them must be starving without food for a few days. They look thin and under nutrition. There are also other volunteers who came to help these poor children by giving knowledge and education. We also dropped by the school to give out the bread to the students. Everyone is so happy with 2 loafs of bread in hand.
We can't help all the children but we hope to help as many as we can. We see a large number of poor people in Cambodia living in poverty. How wonderful if everyone is neither rich or poor... How nice if everyone help one another and not calculative over the gain and loss!
